The blessing of Abraham – JESUS

Español

GOD made a blood covenant with Abraham in perpetuity, because of his faith and obedience, and blessed him as it is written in (Gen 12:3), “And I will bless them that bless thee, and him that curseth thee will I curse; and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed. MT&JPS”

But this blessing was given when abraham was still a gentile, before he was circumcised, before the blood covenant had taken place, and while his name was still Abram.

As we can see, GOD not only blessed Abram but through him HE blessed the whole world, the gentile world.

At the time of this blessing Abram had no sons, so the only ones who could bless him and receive the blessing of GOD in response were the gentiles. The only families over the earth that could be blessed through him were gentile families.

Was the blessing put on hold until the tribes of israel appeared? No, this blessing was not for the tribes, this blessing was for Abram, so the protection of GOD stayed with him constantly, letting his enemies be cursed.

So GOD put a blessing on Abram that could spread over all the world.

Was this blessing ever removed from Abraham after the covenant? No, it was never removed nor restrictions added, it was expanded. (Gen 22:17-18), “17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.” MT&JPS

Since the covenant, the blessing for the nations has been in Abraham and in Abraham’s seed.

But when it was time for Isaac to be blessed, GOD himself gave him a different blessing. (Gen 26:4), “and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these lands; and by thy seed shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves; MT&JPS”.

GOD did not include a blessing for the nations in Isaac but only in Isaac’s seed. So if there was a blessing for the nations in Abraham’s seed and not in Isaac who was a seed of Abraham, this means that the blessing in Abraham’s seed belongs to a specific person in his lineage and not to all the descendants of Abraham.

Now, let’s see what type of blessing jacob, the son of Isaac got.

And Isaac blessed his son jacob this way, (Gen 27:28-29), “28 So God give thee of the dew of heaven, and of the fat places of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. 29 Let peoples serve thee, and nations bow down to thee. Be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee. Cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be every one that blesseth thee.” MT&JPS.

But later on GOD himself blessed Jacob this way, (Gen 28:14), ” And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” MT&JPS.

There is a blessing for all the families of the earth in Jacob and in Jacob’s seed. But in this case there is no doubt that the seed of Jacob is only one specific person, otherwise the blessing of Abraham would have been a lie for in Isaac was never a blessing for the nations.

This is the reason why the LORD is known as the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for the mystery of a unique messiah is clearly defined within the way GOD blesses the three of them.

GOD bless you and keep you.
